Early literacy for children with a print disability / Alphabétisation pour les enfants avec une déficience perceptuelle
Some recommended family storytime material for reading with a child who has a print disability. Some tips: look for books that are high-contrast, larger print and no text super-imposed over images, matte pages (no glare), black and white, tactile and participatory. Be aware of the fact that children may have difficulty getting a sense of larger, complex images, and need extra time to touch tactile books. Rhythm, rhyme, alphabets are all good elements, too - children can anticipate what is coming next without seeing or reading it. Please also consider browsing and borrowing our RAPP packs: in partnership with ALSO (Alternative Learning Styles and Outlooks) and Moi j'apprends, RAPP packs contain tools for parents to help promote and encourage literacy, creativity and self-expression in their children, through stories and interactive activities. While useable by all ages, RAPP packs are geared towards children aged 6 months to 8 years old. English RAPP packs include a children’s book, an activity booklet which includes crafts, poetry and reading and language tips, and either a DVD showing the story in sign language (for ASL pack) or a CD (Voices pack). The ASL pack supports the language and literacy development of children or parents with hearing disabilities or who are deaf. The Voices pack (several titles included here) support the language and literacy development of children or parents either with visual disabilities or who have an auditory learning style.
