Sequel to *The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight*. It’s hard to put this series down! Clever plotting, good characters, well-described action, and a pace that doesn’t let you find any breathing space. These books are military/space war science fiction but the characters are believable and involving, not plastic super-heroes. Campbell has taken on something new in writing a series which flips perspective to the *losing* side in a long space war, after writing several books from the point of view of the winners. One side (“The Alliance”) has finally won a major century-long war. The losing side (“The Syndicate Worlds”) has fractured into smaller groups of planets, in various forms of allegiance to the old ways or to outright rebellion. On the planet Midway, two former Syndicate leaders are attempting to convert their system into something more practical and democratic, while dodging assassination attempts and repelling re-invasion attempts by the remaining Syndicate forces and a mysterious non-human civilization referred to as “the enigma.” Now some officers from each side are forced to work together for survival. If you like books that will get your adrenaline pumping and won’t leave with you with an “empty reading calories” feeling afterwards, this would be a great series to try.
