Not my usual light and fluffy reading. A marvelous look at the history of what—until recently—was a lock-and-key mystery known only to Vatican powers. I am unsure whether the reluctance of Pacelli and his ilk was a symptom of personal opinion, appeasement thinking, the Catholic Church’s wish for world peace, or an aversion to violence. History buffs and religious buffs alike may want to give this a try.
