Bilbo Baggins is an interesting study as a hero. At the start, he is presented as modest, neat to the point of fussiness, attentive to guests, and rather shy. But perhaps because of Gandalf or because of his Tookish heritage, Bilbo begins to display resourcefulness and courage even in situations that are clearly frightening to him (and us). Bilbo's determinization to aid his friends through pluck and courage despite the odds is part of the charm of the story. Towards the end, Bilbo harbors a distaste for the greediness of Thorin and in contrast maintains honesty and displays a generous spirit. His character is certainly one that we all could do well to emulate.
