A Season With Verona

Travels Around Italy in Search of Illusion, National Character And-- Goals!

Being fond of Verona, and Tim Parkes' writing, I was looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, for me, the book became more of a chore than a pleasure, and it became one of the few books I couldn't get myself to finish. It is candid and immediate and personal but the writing style seems to have no relief; each chapter has the same pace and chaotic descriptions of places, persons and events, and this robs the book of any flow that gives the reader opportunities for anticipation as well as reflection. Honest, and fully believable as a personal recounting of his year following the football team, it didn't hit the mark for me as a readable narrative. I suggest trying his later book, Medici Money, about the rise of commercialism and the Medici family in Florence.
