DEADFALL is another great read by Linda Fairstein. Alex Cooper is still trying to recover from a previous book's kidnapping fallout. Yet she manages to insert herself in several active investigations and, as always, with the help of Chapman and Mercer races through a complex weave of players and clues that involves both historical information on New York City and, in this case, big-game sport hunting. By the end of the book, her long-standing, complicated relationship with her DA boss is over and there is a hint she may be in for bigger roles in the future. I will say that I was mildly taken aback by Fairstein's undercurrent of animosity regarding hunting. To be fair, she was mostly focused on big-game, trophy hunting for sport - and I generally agree that is an issue. But Cooper's language throughout seemed to hint at similar feelings about hunting in general. I was for many years a hunter both by choice and sometimes necessity. What we killed, we ate. Haven't hunted in many years now - not as a moral choice, but as career and other interests simply took up that time. Bottom line is, I didn't find some of that language and its nuances about hunting generally all that edifying. I get Fairstein is a writer (and a very good one) and that she has the right to use her work to address social issues as she pleases. Anyway, good book, good story and a fun read. Enjoy.
