Captivating and suspenseful, first lead in one direction and then another. Nothing is as it appears to be. First Prince Merik Nihar is presumed dead by many after an attempted assassination he suspects is his own sister’s doing. Second the Marstoki ship carrying Safiya fon Hasstrel and the Empress of Marstok was attacked in a similar way as Merik’s own demise. After escaping before they could share the same fate as all the crews, they flee. Only to end up being captured by the Hell-Bards of Cartorra. Third as Iseult det Midenzie is on her journey to find her thread-sister Safi, she makes a deal with a demon itself Aduean, a Bloodwitch that can track Safi’s scent. This continues until Aduean rescues a small child which he names Owl. Due to these developments Iselut must choose between Owl’s safety and her thread-sister. Ultimately her choice leads to the acceptance, to some extent of her true witchery. As the book progresses Merik is conflicted as he is haunted by a rhyme that talks of a wicked crab queen and two brothers, Fool brother Filip and Blind brother Daret. It’s about how Filip is blinded by greed and wealth, as he only sees what he wants to, as is the case with Merik. He only saw his sister Vivia as the reason for his recent circumstances and leading Cam blindly into danger as she submissively follows, instead of seeing the bigger picture and realizing that Vivia was an ally all along. In the end he discovers that the rhyme has a happy ending as does Merik, when he is finally able to leave his country in his sister’s more than capable hands. This is as he heads off with his friends by his side in search of the truth. For people who like a bit of thrill, action and character self discovery, this book is for you.
