A novel about marriage and deceit that follows two couples on vacation in Siracusa, a town on the coast of Sicily, where the secrets they have hidden from each other are exposed and relationships are unraveled. New Yorkers Michael, a famous writer, and Lizzie, a journalist, travel to Italy with their friends from Maine--Finn, his wife Taylor, and their daughter Snow. "From the beginning," says Taylor, "it was a conspiracy for Lizzie and Finn to be together." Told Rashomon-style in alternating points of view, the characters expose and stumble upon lies and infidelities past and present. Snow, ten years old and precociously drawn into a far more adult drama, becomes the catalyst for catastrophe as the novel explores collusion and betrayal in marriage.
Until Siracusa I would have sworn I could not enjoy a book if I did not bond with / like at least one character. Ms. Ephron proved me wrong. There are no admiral individuals in this book; I was not even fond of the child ( though that is her mother's fault ). I found the book to be well written and engaging. Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby .AUDIOBOOK availale from MNLINK.
I finished the book only because I loved visiting this area of Sicily. Unfortunately, there was not one character with whom I could identify. They were shallow self-centered people. That being said, these were the type of people needed in order to make the horrible murder of one husband’s lover realistic.
Well-written and funny. Ephron is known for her romantic comedy movies but this book is nothing like those! A dark comedy love triangle mystery set in Italy. Each chapter is told from a different character perspective on the same scene. Definitely gives the reader the idea of how much perspective matters depending on who is telling it. Entertaining to say the least.
Although considered a "summer read" I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characterizations were complex and believable. The writing sharp and sophisticated. As I neared the end of the novel I found myself reading more slowly as I regretted finishing. 5 stars for me!!!

A clever tale of marital betrayal that will make sure you never go on a couples holiday.
