A groundbreaking biography of Elizabeth I revealing for the first time the woman behind the polished veneer as she confronts challenges at home and abroad: war against the Catholic powers of France and Spain, revolt in Ireland, an economic crisis that triggered riots in the streets of London, and a conspiracy to place her cousin Mary Queen of Scots on her throne.

I agree with the author that most biographies of Elizabeth I tend to peter out towards the end of the reign and turn a complicated historical milieu, full of intricate moving parts, into a bit of a cartoonish soap opera. The view here is clear and unromanticized, with reference to primary sources rather than to the previous works on the subject.

An outstanding biography of Elizabeth I. The author goes back to original sources, letters, state papers, abstracts, etc. to present a clear and revealing portrait of a complex woman. A must read for any lover of English history.
