This novel depicts a teenage girl named Isabelle who was forced to grow up at a young age due to her mother’s neglect and drinking habits. Transferring from school to school, Isabelle needs to adapt to these curveballs thrown at her whenever her mother makes a selfish move, not thinking about how her three kids will be impacted and shows little concern for them whatsoever. Rodent follows Isabelle’s day-to-day life which consists of raising her two younger siblings, Maisie and Evan, rushing to her new school where she encounters a group of individuals who she did not get along with on the first day of classes, and working at a small convenience store near her apartment. This novel was very sad, especially when Isabelle’s emotions became too overwhelming for her. There were many moments when the reader could relate with the character, understanding her viewpoint and why Isabelle reacts the way she does to her mother. There were not many action scenes in this novel and so I would not recommend this book for readers who enjoy that genre. 3/5 -@booklover327 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I read this book when I was in grade 8, and still think about the characters. This book is amazing and I think for the time I was reading it was relatable.
