Once the world's most famous chef, Gavin Cruikshank's been in a self-imposed exile for years. His little foodie television program has since evolved into STARVE, an arena sport that pits chef against chef for the pleasure of their super-rich patrons. It's a stain on a once-noble profession, and Chef Gavin is ready to go to war to stop it. Two things stand in his way: his arch rival Roman Algiers, and his adult daughter Angie, who probably just wants her dad back and acting normal.

This is the graphic novel that got me like graphic novels. Lean, mean and easy to read, it's storytelling at it's best.

Really recommend it. Love a good story of a bastard that you love to hate and vice versa because of his journey to redemption and their sometimes sad to admit endearing qualities that pull you in. Awesome piece of work

I checked this out because I was a big fan of Woods' critically acclaimed "DMZ". It looked like there was some dark humor in this that would appeal to me and I rolled the dice on this, even though a comic book about a reality cooking show has never been my thing in the past.

I was not disappointed. Starve Volume 1 was very entertaining. There's a lot of your typical Brian Woods "social commentary" critiquing various aspects of society- but it's not annoying or in your face. There is indeed some good dark humor. There is also good plot development and character growth, but it is very subtle. This is a comic book that probably would bore kids looking for superhero action, but if you are an adult reader whose tastes have matured (like me) you can appreciate the masterful nuances in the art, writing, inking, and basically masterful contributions from the entire creative team. So make sure to sip this one slowly like a fine wine, it's not something to race through the whole volume in 30 minutes.....

The owner at the comic book shop and I both had a chat today saying "I couldn't believe I totally enjoyed a book about a reality cooking show! Weird!"
