I love the main dish and side combinations; there are many tasty ideas. My gripe is that practically every combination except in the salad section requires an oven for one of the dishes. I presume the idea is that while stuff bakes, your hands are free to mess with another recipe. I just do not turn on the oven in July and August, and I am sure not going to use it for baking rice. She could offer alternatives for microwaving.

This is not my favorite of Mrs. Fisher's books, but is still very good. I highly recommend her other excellent book "Not your Mother's Make-ahead and Freeze Cookbook."

I would actually consider buying this cookbook as the recipes don't include a multitude of ingredients and are things my husband would eat on his limited diet. Each recipe is an entrée and side with other suggestions to round out the meal. Fisher's introduction explains her philosophy to quick, cheap meals which includes the kitchen equipment needed for her recipes. She also liberally sprinkles her hard-earned tips for feeding a family on a budget.
