Sparrow siblings Caterina and Leo are going to the beach to have fun and do some whale watching, but when they get there, Caterina is much too busy setting up, collecting shells, and building intricate sand castles to notice anything. Leo is sure a whale will show up (this is more than optimism for a whale can be seen in the distance), but Caterina thinks otherwise. It is only after Leo wanders off, that she wakes up. They came here to have fun together! Kono's sparrows return in all their colourful, mixed media glory. Pretty patterned paper, photos, and string are cut out then pasted together to create a very cheerful tone. Like the other books there are some good messages about family and life. In our haste to do things, we miss out on wondrous things that are happening right under our noses. So, when on vacation, enjoy the vacation and you'll see a whale just like these two did.
