Jennifer Aniston proves she can be quite good as a dramatic actress in this movie. Hope to see more of her in such roles.

Jennifer Aniston was spot on in her performance, but it was a hard movie to watch. Every time she was being arrogant/obnoxious/cruel/self destructive I switched my focus to the other actors/actresses surrounding her. They all were perfect, Adriana Barraza, Sam Worthington, Anna Kendrick and the perfectly timed appearance of William H. Macy. They really made Aniston's character bearable and the movie worthwhile.

This raw, accurate depiction of a woman in intense physical pain and psychic numbness is a superb performance by Anniston. But, you have to be ready for it. It is not a comedy, dark or otherwise, although there are some funny moments of relief. It deals with literal life and death issues; those who have not examined themselves in these circumstances will not find much to like. For those who said "pretty awful" - yes, it portrays accurately what raw human pain looks like on many levels. Anniston spent a great deal of time with people like her character in preparing for this role, which in my opinion, she absolutely nailed. It is uncommon for Hollywood to depict something of this depth on this subject.

Pretty awful. A total waste of my time. I think Jennifer is on a downhill slide and maybe nearing end of career.

I never would have guessed that Jennifer Aniston had this level of acting in her. Having lived through many years of on again/off again (but mostly on again) pain myself, I'd have to say that her portrayal of a person in constant pain was spot on. In fact I was extremely uncomfortable throughout the movie and for some time afterwards from the flashbacks she triggered in me. (Thank goodness she at least had money - if she'd been as financially strapped as I was on top of trying to cope with such pain and loss, I don't think I could have borne it!) The movie had some very good messages about the great importance of knowing the truthful good about yourself (we are always so hard on ourselves), and to keep taking whatever steps forward that we are able to, no matter how small or unimportant they may seem.

What a relief to see Jennifer Anniston break out of the playpen. And she does a great job.

The story of a woman who suffers chronic pain after the car accident that kills her son and leaves her ailing, CAKE is an examination of chronic pain, prescription addiction, depression, and its aftershocks that shake the relationship dynamics in one's life. Claire Bennett, played by a dressed-down Jennifer Aniston, is our protagonist carrying us through her journey. However, I don't find her story compelling. The themes are interesting, sure, but I don't really care for the plot. For that reason, I can't recommend CAKE.

Even though the premise of this film is extremely dark, I thought that the acting was done very well and the movie was even funny at times. Dealing with grief is extremely difficult for everyone and I have no idea how I would handle what Claire had been through but I thought this story, although depressing and somewhat bizarre, was realistic.

Becky: [Asking about Claire's scars, while riding in the car with her and Silvana] "So what happened? Was it gory?"

Claire: "My parachute failed to open and I fell over ten thousand feet to the ground."

Becky: "Did not."

Claire: "Did too. What's in L.A.?"

Becky: "I'm gonna be an actress."

[Silvana is seen rolling her eyes in the rearview mirror]

Claire: "Yeah. That's a sad story. I hate to tell you, but you're going to end up in porn...because that's what happens to girls from Idaho."

Becky: "Gross! I won't do porn."

Silvana: [agreeing with Claire] "Yes. That's what happens to bad girls."

Claire: "I'm just trying to help you avoid some of the many mistakes you seem so intent on making."

Becky: "Are you always such a f**king shrew?"

Claire: [laughs] "Oh, someone took a Shakespeare class."

On the way to Mexico:
Claire: Are we in Orange County yet?
Silvana: I don't know.
Claire: Do you only see white people?
Silvana: I don't know. Maybe.
Claire: Then we're in f-king Orange County.
Silvana: Pretty houses.
Claire: (GROANS) Oh, I hated trials in Orange County. A, you had to assume that everyone was a fucking retard. Or B, you had to assume that everyone was a f-king right-wing Nazi sympathizer. "Oh, hey, I'm the card-carrying
ACLU defense attorney. Please don't hold that against my client... and sentence him to death for shoplifting." Okay. And don't get me started on that f-king Nixon library.
Silvana: You take your medicine today?
Claire: Would we be driving to Tijuana if I took my f-king medicine today?

On the way to the clinic:
Claire: Never take Crescent Heights.
Silvana: How can you know?
Claire: Because I can feel it.
Silvana: Oh.
Claire: Crescent Heights is like
being thrown in a burlap sack, getting carted across the tundra by a horse.

Claire suffers from chronic pain resulting from a tragic accident that killed her son. Painkillers get her through the day but the suicide of a member of her support group starts her on a different path. Not a warm and fuzzy story but very human and a very good performance by Jennifer Aniston.
