A character study and thriller that works despite the meagre skills of the director, whose general history betrays him as a hack. The strength of the cast and the screenplay compensate for the poor choice of director, who does let some of his standard film techniques out to play here. A career spy with failing health is drawn back into work for one final mission while trying to fix his relationships with his wife and daughter. Costner gives the character a thoroughly grizzled, gruff sensibility that slowly softens as time goes along. There's a bit of a dark sense of humour to the story too, particularly in how he deals with people he's trying to get answers out of. The antagonists are shadowy sorts, and the protagonist is a world weary but thoroughly dangerous fellow that takes time to get used to.
