Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, a combination of jazz, funk, and Nigerian percussion styles. It was also a political force, a propulsive delivery system of Fela's revolutionary ideas, pitched against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a tilt towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan-Africanist politics to the world. The power and potency of Fela's music and message endure today.

I was blown away when I saw Fela Kuti at a jazz festival in the 80's... all my concepts of Jazz went out the window, one of the best shows I've ever seen. So here is a 2 hour video mixing live footage of the real Fela with the American actors in a Broadway play about him... where did they find such an amazing musician to play him? This film is really well made, of course he was no saint (27 wives), and it portrays the real man, through interviews with people close to him.

If you could roll Bob Dylan, James Brown and Che Guevara into one person that would be Fela Kuti. Filmmaker Alex Gibney uses the Bill T. Jones musical FELA! as the organizing principle for the documentary, which allows him to bounce between the past and the near present exploring Fela's career and his legacy. Superb succinct explication of the origins of Afrobeat as well as the petro-politics of Nigeria.

What an interesting and fun documentary about one-of-a-kind musician and activist, Fela. Fans of documentaries about music and political resistance will enjoy this lively and engaging film.
