aIn the winter of 1989, Eva Gibson is a university student living in downtown Toronto. She's homesick and anxious to finish her education and return home to serve her Anishinaabe community. Then tragedy strikes and it becomes the Gibson family's legacy. Back on the rez, Eva's brothers and sister struggle to cope with their losses and redefine "their legacy". Some turn to ceremony; some turn to vice. All the while, they contend with a creeping sentiment of revenge.

I really liked this story, especially the fact that every part follows one of the 5 siblings of a traumatized Ojibway family. I learned a lot about life on 'the rez' and how First Nations people see white people - I'm glad this came from an Aboriginal author, instead of a white author speaking for them. The writing style is not sophisticated; this book could be read easily by people who are less literate, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as I think Canadians from all backgrounds should know more about First Nations people's experience.

Should be categorized as Young Adult. Terrible writing.

I first heard about this lovely writer from a CBC podcast, "The Next Chapter." I was intrigued to read this book and I was not disappointed. The writer takes you into this family and allows one to feel the complicated processes of living in such an unfriendly world. It is not a desolate story, but one of spirit and hope.
