Commissario Guido Brunetti’s hopes for a refreshing family holiday in the mountains are once again dashed when a gruesome discovery is made in Marghera—a body so badly beaten the face is completely unrecognizable. Brunetti searches Venice for someone who can identify the corpse but is met with a wall of silence. He then receives a telephone call from a contact who promises some tantalizing information. And before the night is out, Brunetti is confronting yet another appalling, and apparently senseless, death.

Aka the anonymous Venetian

Mar 02, 2016

In Leon's third Brunetti mysteries, he and his assistant learn new things about their city, themselves, and their boss. A murder in an area frequented by prostitutes appears at first to be of a transvestite--a man wearing a red dress and new red shoes. With no ID, and his face battered beyond recognition, it takes a while to learn that he's a prominent businessman. But the transvestite label doesn't fit. This discovery leads Brunetti and his team to investigate prostitutes and confront their own feelings about sexual identity. It also leads to danger and another murder. Meantime, Lt. Patta's marital troubles threaten to hit the national tabloids. Brunetti's wife helps him understand his own reactions while they attempt to keep their children from knowing about the case. She also feeds her family wonderful meals while reading Henry James.

This series is excellent--great plots, interesting characters, and a matchless setting. Enjoy!

I'm loving this series. Great sense of locale and Italian life.
