From the award-winning author of Angelmaker and The Gone-Away World: a novel at once deeply heartfelt and headlong thrilling-about parenthood, friendship, and secret identities, about heroes of both the super and the everyday kind.Exhausted by a hard tour of duty in Afghanistan, Sergeant Lester Ferris is sent to occupy the largely ceremonial post of British consul in Mancreu. This larcenous island is facing impending ecological disaster-which makes it, in the meantime, the perfect spot for the international underworld. The first third of this book is really charming, simple and pleasant. Then it shifts genre two times, with very uneven transitions, improbable situations and a highly inappropriate ending considering the book that it started out to be. I cannot understand why this gets so much attention from the literary world. It doesn't deserve it. On the other hand, the main character is very likable.

"The Tiger Man, for Christ's sake! I'm living in a comic book."
A strange combination of thriller, literary fiction, and verbal "graphic novel” that whizzes past inventive toward ridiculously improbable. While mostly entertaining in classic comic book tradition (curiosity satisfied, good trumps evil, romance, an action-packed chase, etc.) , I expected more. There was just something wrong with treating a story about the moral murk that empire leaves behind, and Ferris’s emotional attachment to the boy, with the easy bombast of an adventure story for boys.

"Assigned to a ceremonial post in Mancreu, British consul and Afghanistan war veteran Lester Ferris is compelled to disregard widespread underworld activities while bonding with a comic-addicted youth who during a violent uprising desperately relies on him for help.
