I can't get enthused about plots that hinge on a billion-to-one coincidence. This is what put me off Patriot Games.

loved it.

Wait, didn't we just see this?

A great action movie for people like me who don't normally like action movies. Actually has a twisty-turny plot. (Most action movies barely have a plot at all). And when it comes to bad guys, James Woods (in this), Christopher Walken, and Alan Rickman are the masters everyone else learns from.

Pretty much every review I have read about this movie calls it for what it is: a cheesy, hammy unapologetic, but well shot and well paced action guilty pleasure. This is from the director of Independence Day and it really shows. The only issue I have is the with James Woods and his role, type casting much? Very little will surprise you, this is so thoroughly 'Die Hard' in the White House that you could die of liver poisoning by playing a drinking game whenever the movie steals a trope from Bruce Willis. But that doesn't matter, because it's fun and doesn't care that it's kind of dopey. The actors are well cast. The pacing is good. The film is well framed and shot. The action is fun (although grenades don't blow up like that), and harsh criticism about realism or plausibility really miss the point.

One sentence captures it all: Oh so cheesy but oh so good!
If you like watching Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal blow up things over and over, then this is the movie for you. Some interesting plot twists too, for a shameless action movie.

I saw 'Olympus Has Fallen" and the cover shot of this same-plot movie was promising [sarcasm]. I was right. It's a definite contender in the so-bad-it's-good Oscar category [that's bulging with classics like Will Smith's Independence Day].
This movie pulls out all the stops, is utterly shameless in milking every cliche the director could find. I especially liked the scene where the heroic little girl grabs the white house flag and bravely waves it to stop the fighter jet strike. [The director did miss making her have a dog tho: "oh Lassie, run for help!" Otherwise almost perfect.]
Hambone to the bone! Don't stop now- beat it to death!
Even the terrorists are fun in this one - no-neck and scrawny rednecks instead of scary [can i say, slit-eyed?] yellow-peril Koreans.
If Sylvester Stallone makes you giggle, see this one.

President Sawyer: I lost the rocket launcher.

Cale: You lost... How do you lose a rocket launcher?

From IMDb:

Walker: You just killed the Secretary of Defense.
Stenz: Well, he wasn't doing a very good job.

Cale: I got three rounds. Tell me you got some weapons in the residence.
President Sawyer: No, we usually have two agents right there with machine guns. We got some knives in the kitchen.
Cale: What?
President Sawyer: They're big knives.
Cale: Great, then you can make me a sandwich.
