The Bakersfield Sound in country music was defined by the fine singers and guitar players , Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. This CD, performed by Owens's band, the Buckaroos, and originally released on two albums in 1965 and 1971, is a collection of Buck's and Merle's early hits. They're certainly competent musicians, but it's an odd collection; basically, we're hearing a backup band without either a lead singer or lead musician. The Owens tracks are instrumental while some of Haggard's songs have both instruments and background vocals, but no lead. The main value of this record is as an equivalent of karaoke, with you as lead singer (lyrics are included), or as a "backing track" for someone who wants to play along or take the lead with his or her own instrument. It's a decent collection of tunes, including "I've Got A Tiger By THe Tail", "Act Naturally", "Okie from Muskogee", and "Mama Tried," but not a good CD for just listening, better to find collections featuring Buck and Merle.
