While I have long felt that trout weren't as smart as anglers assumed, Bob Wyatt systematically sets out to destroy the ideas that trout become "educated" about certain fly patterns and that exact imitations are necessary to catch these very smart fish. Based on my incorporation of his ideas in to my fishing, I think he's right. What really matters is presentation and giving the fish the right "triggers" that the fish key in on when searching for prey.

I used to fiddle around with all sorts of complicated flies, but I've found that a handful of simple, impressionistic flies are really all you need. I've adopted Wyatt's Snowshoe Hare Emerger as just about the only "dry" fly I ever use, and it's never failed me as long as the size is reasonably close to whatever the fish are feeding on, and that "reasonably close" means I only tie them in sizes 12, 18, and 26.

If you find this book informative, I also highly recommend "Simple Flies" by Morgan Lyle.
