Renée Fleming has established her place in history as a great Strauss soprano; and, she has done so with both musicianship and exceptional grace. It's especially rewarding to hear in her in selections that are not usually performed. Christian Thielemann has likewise made himself an eminent Straussian. Of course, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is a veteran Strauss orchestra. Now, the performance of Eine Alpensinfonie isn't without certain imperfections; but, it is truly refined, powerful, subtle, and - indeed - special.
