In this warmhearted comic yarn, fate throws the young African refugee Idrissa, into the path of Marcel Marx, a kindly bohemian who shines shoes for a living, in the French harbor city Le Havre. With inborn optimism and the support of most of his tight-knit community, Marcel stands up to the officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation.

Nice but too sentimental.

This is a slow-paced human drama with a twist of comedy in it. The happy ending is a bit contrived but overall this is one enjoyable film about human passion. In French with subtitles.

Terrible Film - Nothing happens for the first hour. Bad quality, bad directing. Camera often focuses on a character's face staring into the distance for an abnormally long time (10 + seconds). Characters are either smoking or drinking every 5 minutes in the film. Superbly boring. The worst French film I have ever watched.

A great movie with some great life messages. The use of color and cinematography were exceptional. Little Bob is truly a gem to be shared with the rest of the world.

In a world gone mad, this is a little glimmer of hope. Little Bob should run for office. VIVA LA PARIS!!!!!

Talk about a low budget movie, this felt like a French soap opera. Nothing great here, expected more.

I wasn't looking for a feel good movie but found this. It was lovely to see the lead character do what needed to be done for the young boy although it took him great effort, time and courage. It was also great to see an older person who wasn't worn down by life and embittered. There are a lot of horrible events happening in the world but at the same time it is people like Marcel kind and unselfish of heart who make the world a better place and give the innocent a chance at life.

A wry, sweet film set in the title port city and directed by the Finnish Aki Kaurismaki, who also did "Leningrad Cowboys Go West." It tackles immigration, aging and illness without being sentimental or didactic, which is hard to do. Contrary to another commentator, I wouldn't describe this as "melodramatic," but rather understated and observant. This is a 2-disc set released by Criterion.
