Maggie, part French, part Mi'kmaq, arrives at the little seaside cottage inherited from Gheeju, her Mi'kmaq grandmother. It's a foggy night, and unable to sleep, Maggie takes Gheeju's birchbark canoe, and paddles along shore. In the mist, she bumps into a galleon. Before she can understand what is happening, the canoe is pulled towards the ship. Maggie escapes the force, but cannot understand why the fog has dissipated and why someone from the galleon is firing at her. When Maggie Burns first realises the truth---that she's been transported to another time--she knows her life has changed, but is it a change she can embrace? Torn between her heart and her home, between her old world and her new love, Maggie must decide what she wants.
