Documentary breaks down the beef within the group, even when they tried to reconcile differences. RIP Phife Dawg.

I remember when A Tribe Called Quest first came out. I was the first to buy their album. Well, at that time, the cassette. It was unlike anything I've ever heard. Jazz and hip hop?! It blew my mind!!!! It's such a shame when groups like this break up.

An inspiring, but also poignant documentary about the groundbreaking hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, who emerged in late 80s in what is often referred to as the golden age of hip-hop. It's directed by actor Michael Rapaport, who is clearly fan, and he got unusually candid interviews from the group members. The first half focuses on their rise and their first few classic albums, as well as the other groups in the loosely affiliated Native Tongues (including Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, and Queen Latifah). The amount of talent that was coming out of NYC at the time was extraordinary and even if you didn't live through it, it will make you nostalgic. The second half of the film focuses more on the tensions in the group, especially between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, which lead to their break up. They did reunite for shows, but the tensions never really dissipated. Things were complicated by Phife Dawg's diabetes, which eventually claimed his life at 45. Although this was completed before his death, there is an added emotional component. Despite this, it is a celebration of one of the great hip-hop acts and it will send you back to their classic albums to find out exactly what the scenario is.

This is a great documentary. Michael Rapaport knows his stuff when it comes to rap, he is a true fan. Also check out his filmography on Wikipedia, he has been in tonnes of stuff.
