The title is explained on page 446, and something finally happens almost at the middle of page 500. Sure, I suppose it's well-written, and if you like 499 and a half pages of nothing but well-written-ness, you'll love this book. And it was good when something finally happened. There's a sequel, w... Read More »

Such a good book. The amazing plot and intriguing characters keep you hooked till the end. The entire concept of the star-crossed lovers and the curse leave readers wanting more. Can't wait to read the next books in the series.

This book begins in a stagnant South Carolina town, or so Ethan believes. After Lena arrives in Gatlin, Ethan discovers a bizarre and magical underworld that has always existed in his seemingly boring hometown. My main complaint is that the book was very repetitive, and the story could have been told in half as many pages.

The story has an appeal and it's one of those books you want to read until the end. The characters are truly relatable even though their lives are supernatural and that's what makes the book interesting to read. I really enjoyed the irony of how fate destined the main characters, a jock and an oddball, to be together no matter how complicated things became or what opposition they faced from their families and friends. The authors also do a great job of putting a supernatural storyline into the setting of a small southern town and the contrast is intriguing, especially in the flashbacks to the 1800's. Would recommend to others to read.

I really do like the ideas behind this book. "Casters" who could manipulate magic? Twisted families? Small town with hidden secrets? Definitely my kind of books. Oh yes, and throw in a pair of Romeo and Juliet unlikely-worthy couple, and there you have it. I saw this on a recommended shelf and decided to give it a go. And I do really wish I stopped here because it honestly didn't get any better from this ending. I ship Lena and Ethan, especially their beginning, but it kind of dropped my interest after this book. I am not sure if the movie is better, but apparently I should give that a try too, according to a friend who "loved it". 4/5 stars

When I was first recommend Beautiful Creatures I thought that it would be just like all the other fantasy romance novels, ordinary and repetitive. I picked it up for a second time, giving it an actual chance this time and it turned out that I really like this book. Beautiful Creatures is about a boy named Ethan Wate who is trapped in a small town named Gaitlyn. This town is full of superficial people who don’t except any new comers. After Ethan’s mother passed away from a car accident he is feeling alone. All he wants is to finish school and ditch the place he and many generations of his family have called home. Ethan is unexpectedly introduced to a new girl named Lena who is mysterious compared to his generic life. She is the niece of the most intolerable man in town, Macon Ravenwood. This town and its people are not at all excepting of Lena’s presence. These uncivil people do everything possible to try and ruin Lena, but she has more of a history in Gaitlyn then they know!!
Beautiful Creatures doesn’t have your typical fantasy characters such as vampires, werewolves or witches. They are different and that’s what makes this book stand out. Reading this book makes you second-guess your own life. You begin to ask yourself are you being true to yourself? Following your own dreams? Or are you pretending to be someone that your not? Even though it is a fantasy fiction book I still related to it.
The book does not start out very fast, but stick with it, it becomes a great read. If you are interested in the mortal instruments, infernal devices or twilight I recommend reading this series.

Enticing book

JCLChristinaC Mar 24, 2015

With its almost unpolished (but fantastic!) backdrop, the audience is drawn into Ethan and Lena’s world through simplistic sketchbook style artwork. Quick and eventful, this story is full of tension. While the romance lacks a sense of depth in its development, the bond between Lena and Ethan is portrayed with beautiful clarity. The reader may not have a full understanding of what brought them together, but that is part of the charm and fantasy. With an intriguing story and wonderful illustrations, this Manga is great for young adults who love fantasy and romance. I have yet to read the full novel, but the graphic novel has definitely made me want to.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is set in fictional Gatlin, South Carolina. The novel is told by protagonist Ethan Wate who lives with his writer father and housekeeper Amma who is “more like [Ethan’s] grandmother.”[2] The story begins on the first day of Ethan’s sophomore year when he wakes up from a recurring dream he’s been having about a girl he doesn’t know. That morning he finds a “creepy- almost hypnotic,” [3] song called Sixteen Moons on his iPod and also notices the smell of rosemary and lemon. At school Ethan find out there is a new girl this year which is surprisingly because Gatlin “hadn’t had a new girl in school since the 3rd grade,”[4] the new girl is “old man Ravenwood’s niece.” [5] Macon Melchizedek Ravenwood is the town shut in and is often compared to the character Boo Radley from To Kill A Mocking Bird in the novel. Ethan later hears Lena playing Sixteen Moons in band.
When Ethan drives her home he almost runs over Lena who is standing on the road in the middle of the storm looking for someone to help with her broken down car. When Ethan notices she smells like lemon and rosemary he realized that Lena is the girl from his dreams. He soon learns that Lena is a Caster, a person who can use magic, and that on her sixteenth birthday she will be claimed for either Light or Dark. Ethan tries to find a way to save Lena from going Dark and solve the mystery of how he is connected to Lena. At the same time Lena is trying to handle the whole town turning against her “we don’t take kind to strangers [in Gatlin].”(Garcia 123) Lena and Ethan discover that they are connected through years of Gatlin and Caster history.

I liked this book. It was interesting, the paranormal aspects were fairly unique, and I love a story with a long family history like this one has.
But I just liked it. It never grabbed me and demanded that I keep reading. I think, mostly, this was because the pacing was off. There was too much time during the story when I was relaxed and not worried about whether the characters were going to get out of trouble. Sure, there were intense moments when I was glued to the pages, but then things slowed down too much and I was lulled into a strange sense of security. This made it too easy to set the book down.
Beautiful Creatures is a good story. I think it could have been great if it had been shorter, which would have increased the tension and kept the reader glued to the pages through the whole story. Or, at least, if it had a bit more depth to it with the characters and setting.
Overall, the only thing that really set it apart was the paranormal aspect, which was really interesting and unique. Unfortunately, it's not enough.
