A riveting new novel set in Charlotte, North Carolina, featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan. Kathy Reichs's trademark blend of forensic descriptions that "chill to the bone" ( Entertainment Weekly ) and breathless suspense have made her books major bestsellers worldwide. Now, she delivers the fourteenth thriller in a "cleverly plotted and expertly maintained series" ( The New York Times Book Review ). A body is found in a barrel of asphalt next to Lowes Motor Speedway near Charlotte just as 200,000 fans are pouring into town for race week. The next day, a NASCAR crew member shares with Tempe a devastating story. Twelve years earlier his sister, Cyndi Gamble, then a high school senior who wanted to be a professional racecar driver, disappeared along with her boyfriend, Cale Lovette. Lovette kept company with a group of right wing extremists known as the Patriot Posse. Is the body Cyndi's? Or Cale's? At the time of their disappearance, the FBI joined the investigation, but the search was quickly terminated. As Tempe is considering multiple theories, including an FBI cover-up, a surprising, secret substance is found with the body, leaving Tempe to wonder what exactly the government was up to.

Good entry in a solid series. A bit of the flavor of NASCAR in Charlotte. Unfortunately Andrew Ryan is not in this one.

Excellent Kathy Reichs novel. Interesting plot & not over done on the NASCAR racing scene. Very interesting characters & a novel you can leave for awhile & just pick up where you left off.

Tempe is on another case. It's Reich's 14th novel in the series I think. This one is set in Charlotte, her home base. It deals with right wing extremists and Nascar races. It starts with a body found in a dump in a barrel filled with asphalt. Another good read.

Not one of Dr. Reich’s best efforts. Very short of the usual forensic details of her earlier books.

Read the book - it was ok but I do not like this writer.

I have to say I found the plot for this book a little thin on the forensic details and the plot just didn't seem as exciting as Reich's other books. Still it was an enjoyable read and I love the character Temperance Brennan.

Another Kathy Reichs book. Not one of her best. It was enjoyable while it lasted, but I have forgotten exactly what it was about..... not a gripping story line.

I enjoy Reich's books, but I think this is one case where the television version is better than the book. I don't like the book version of Temperance Brennan. I think Bones does a better job of developing characters and making them relatable.

Goodreads Summary: Just as 200,000 fans are pouring into town for Race Week, a body is found in a barrel of asphalt next to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The next day, a NASCAR crew member comes to Temperance Brennan's office at the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner to share a devastating story. Twelve years earlier, Wayne Gamble's sister, Cindi, then a high school senior and aspiring racer, disappeared along with her boyfriend, Cale Lovette. Lovette kept company with a group of right-wing extremists known as the Patriot Posse. Could the body be Cindi's? Or Cale's?

At the time of their disappearance, the FBI joined the investigation, only to terminate it weeks later. Was there a cover-up? As Tempe juggles multiple theories, the discovery of a strange, deadly substance in the barrel alongside the body throws everything into question. Then an employee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention goes missing during Race Week. Tempe can't overlook the coincidence. Was this man using his lab chemicals for murder? Or is the explanation even more sinister? What other secrets lurk behind the festive veneer of Race Week?

A turbocharged story of secrets and murder unfolds in this, the fourteenth thrilling novel in Reichs's "cleverly plotted and expertly maintained series" (The New York Times Book Review). With the smash hit Bones about to enter its seventh season and in full syndication-and her most recent novel, Spider Bones, an instant New York Times bestseller-Kathy Reichs is at the top of her game.

One uncertainty blossomed again and again , drowning out other thoughts like a drunken uncle at a family gathering.

The heat in the car was like hot syrup against my skin.
