Tamora Pierce is one of the world's worst writers. Skip this junk.

Wish she would write some short stories about Briar, Sandry, Daja, and Tris.

A collection of stories with strong female characters. The last two stories were somewhat more mature in tone than the others.

Several tales from Tortall. All very agreeable. One contemporary urban fantasy which is very disturbing -- not bad, just really disturbing.

Student of the Ostriches and a Dragon's Tale were my favorite stories of this book.

A marvelous, very enjoyable addition to her other books. I especially liked the story about the tree Numair turned into a man, and his matter of fact acceptance of the fact that the only person who would have anything to do with him was a young woman. As with all of her other books, I will be re-reading this one for years. I also hope Mastiff comes out very, very soon!

This was a highly enjoyable book. I liked reading about the familiar characters from the Tortall books, as well as new characters from both Tortall and the other worlds. While I think that Tamora Pierce is a bit better at writing novels, I still really enjoyed this book.

She didn’t know which was worse, waiting for one of her father’s rages or having one break over her head. She hated being a coward.

Adria could not be content unless things made sense. They had to have a reason to be the way that they were. Even “it’s magic” wasn’t a good enough explanation. She had seen enough guild magic lessons and the work of marketplace mages to know that magic had rules.

Sunflower could not survive on his own. He let meals burn. He let fires die. He knew wonderful stories for every constellation but had no idea of their summer or winter positions, which could guide his travels. She found him watching a sandstorm advance, as if it were an interesting display. She barely got him back to the karn with both their skins in one piece.

Coarse Language: Only in the last two stories, the others are pretty clean.

Other: Nothing horrible. I just don't think reader much younger than 12 will be interested.
