FANTASY. There is big and evil magic abroad upon the face of the Earth. History has been changed. The Germans have won WWII. America is a nuclear wasteland. And worst of all, the breakfast menu at The Wife's Legs Cafe in Brentford is serving Bratwurst rather than the proper big boys' British banger. Something is Not Right. And when the world's all wrong and it needs setting right, who're you gonna call? Hugo Rune, that's who. A man who offers the world his genius, and asks only, in return, that the world cover his expenses. And so, with the aid of his faithful acolyte and companion Rizla, the guru's guru, also known as the hokus bloke, the Lad Himself and the Retromancer, sets out to rewrite history the way it should be.

Robert Rankin hits the teenage attitude on the head with Rizla and his portrayal of Hugo is so clear you can very easily admire and get annoyed with the man. The time travel is convincing and his explanations for things such as the God Partical and the events in history are captivating. If you enjoy Doctor Who (Which I really, really, do) you will enjoy Retromancer.

This would probably be much more enjoyable for someone used to British styles of expression. I couldn't get into it. I enjoyed The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse, and it was not so thoroughly British, so I suspect that Rankin exaggerates his Britishness for this particular series. I'll try the Toyminator next.

Great fun--light but not dumb. Lots of weird stuff but nothing too gritty. Perfect intelligent escapism.
