Miguel 'Sugar' Santos is a talented Dominican baseball player who longs to break into the American big league and earn the money needed to support his impoverished family. He is a talented pitcher who might just have what it takes to earn a prized spot on a Major League Baseball team. Before that happens he'll have to prove his worth in the minor leagues. Advancing in baseball's minor league system at the tender age of 19, Miguel is warmly welcomed into the small-town Iowa home of his host family. He struggles with language and cultural barriers despite the kindness of strangers. Subsequently forced to reevaluate his life's ambition after his once-trusty arm becomes unreliable. The previously single-minded pitcher gradually begins to question both the world he lives in and the role he has chosen to play in it.

Very good film but problematic for the hearing impaired. The catalog description is in error: Spoken languages in the movie are Spanish (primarily) w/ quite a lot of English interwoven throughout. The DVD comes with automatically non-removable yellow subtitles which are English language sub-title translations of all the words spoken in Spanish. The English language dialogue does not show in the yellow sub-titles.
For hearing impaired viewers one has to concurrently use the closed-captioning [if the borrower has a Remote w/ closed captioning]. The closed- captions show the Spanish and English language dialogue in white-letter English captions but they are superimposed over the yellow subtitled caption (so some of the yellow subtitle words are seen at the same time as the white closed captioning.) A very unnecessary visual distraction. The director and the distributor should have made the English language subtitles optional rather than mandatory and they would have avoided this white text over and near yellow text mess.

Great film. YOu may think that you know how the plot is going to unfold, but this movie provides insight into the reality of the game.

This is a great film. Nothing is over done or preachy. There is no villainy simply a well told story that is long over due.

Good - Sugar (2008) 120 min. This is the story of Dominican Republic’s Miguel "Sugar" Santos, a fictional character, trying to make into Major League Baseball. The charm in this film is the humbleness of the narrative throughout. The director does away with the Hollywood bright colors and fan fare in place of a simple story about a native Dominican struggling with culture, language and himself in vying for a life in baseball. The film may have been a touch too long but the characters surrounding Sugar are real and display life lessons for Sugar. Well-made film.
