The prosecutor- Julia Valenciano. Young, ambitious and facing a case that could launch her career.
The defendant - David Marquette. A successful Miami surgeon and devoted family man.
The victims - Marquette's own wife and three small children.
The plea- Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.

But the state suspects Marquette's insanity defence is being fabricated to disguise murders that were cold-blooded and calculated. Worse, Julia believes Marquette could be responsible for a string of unsolved, brutal homicides. The distraught survivor could just be one of the most prolific and elusive serial killers in Florida's history.

The trial will take Julia on a painful personal journey back to a past she has struggled for fifteen years to forget. And it will bring her face to face with a future that is so frightening, she's not sure if she even wants to see it.

Julia Vacanti is a young lawyer in Miami. She is assigned to prosecute the respected Dr. David Marquette who has brutally murdered his wife and children - or has he?

The defense submits a plea of insanity which touches too close to home for Julia. She has pushed aside the memories of a terrible tragedy in her childhood but they come back to haunt her.

I was totally impressed with Jilliane Hoffman's writing. This is the first book that I have read of her work. It will definitely not be the last! The characters were well developed and I connected with Julia early in the story. The quick pace and tension kept me interested. I thought the topic of mental disorders was well presented. In fact, I believe I was educated through the story about this terrible problem and I will have more compassion the next time I read about a violent murderer who had a "past history of mental issues".

Great read by a lawyer. The ending was somewhat disappointing for me...I felt that the second chair for the prosecution would not have thrown the case by the tone of her questioning of the last witness for the prosecution, however, it may just be a matter of personal opinion. Very well written, at times, the tension builds necessitating that the reader continue to read just to find out what will happen next. Worthwhile, especially for those who are drawn to legal murder mysteries. I highly recommend this author and will read her other books.

I really enjoyed this book, however was somewhat disappointed in the ending. The plot was excellent, very climactic, however, the second chair on the prosecutor threw the whole case during her questioning of the last witness for the prosecution...it just didn't "feel" right to me. Other than this one aspect, I would recommend this book to those who share a passion for legal murder mysteries...the author is a lawyer with vast experience and knowledge, which makes the novel very realistic.
