Guilty to have appreciated some of the dark humor, at least early on before realizing that the film was on a most disturbing matter that a childhood was going wrong, very very very wrong. The experience was so disconcerting that I fast watched it again with commentary by Neil Jordan turned on to make sure I did not misinterpret the scenes that brought about the boy’s insanity. Acted and narrated by boys, e.g. Owens was 14 as Francie when the film was released in 1997, but for mature audience who could stomach such an horrid tragedy.

-The description gave away the plot and wonder why none of the "community police" are not yelling aloud: SPOILERS! SPOILERS! …
-Not based on “The Butcher’s Boy -1982” books by Thomas Perry, which is a fun page turner but “The Butcher Boy - 1992” by Patrick McCabe who won the 1992 Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Fiction and was shortlisted for the 1992 Booker Prize for the novel.

Awesome portrayal of his vision of the Virgin Mary by Sinéad O'Connor

Bleak. Very depressing watching this poor boy try to cope, without any guidance at all. I had to turn it off.

This film has utterly nothing to do w/Thomas Perry's The Butcher's Boy or w/Thomas Perry. What possible point is there in listing it as though it does????

Let us say this movie leaves an impression. Not only is it a convincing picture of madness, it may drive you mad, and I'm not kidding (see the plot summary; warning: it has spoilers.) Since this is an Irish film, it is also very funny. I have a small altar in my home, dedicated to the actors: Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Eamonn Owens, and especially the little boy who plays Francie's friend Joe.

This movie provides good insight into how psychopathology forms. Disturbing and upsetting - but well said.

Don't want to relive the tragicomedy and review the srt file for quotes. Good thing there are many in IMDb already including this one:

You can do one bad thing, can't you, Joe? You can do one bad thing. That doesn't mean for the rest of your life everyone's going to say, "He did it! It's him! He did the bad thing!"
