Olive is a little girl who dreams of winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so dysfunctional that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father, Richard, is unsuccessful as a motivational speaker. He is barely on speaking terms with Olive's mother. Her uncle Frank has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence. And Olive's grandfather is a loser with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in California.

Amazing movie! I'm way late to the party on this film, but this movie is so good! It's funny, sad, with a mix of crazy! The cast is great, Steve Carroll, Alan Arkin, and Toni Collette were standouts to me. Please watch this one!

One of my top movies. It is hilarious. I think of it every time I hear Super Freak on the radio.

This is an adorable, quirky film about a dysfunctional family that comes together to help one of their own achieve a goal. Some dark humor, but lots of heart and an important message about mental illness.

great little family flick. alan arkin is an absolute riot.

This movie is just plain funny. If you read some of the other reviews you'll be made aware of the so called inappropriate aspects included in this film. And there are many. But if you're an adult with a sense of humor that leans toward silly, this is it. It is serious, and sad, and shocking (I guess).....yeah. But it is so silly and funny. I needed a film to watch while waiting at the imaging lab to have my next scan done and this one more than fit the bill. I looked like an idiot with my headphones on laughing out loud. But looking silly goes well with this silly film!

Junk. Alan Arkin needs to have his mouth washed out with soap, and the rest of the cast is ridiculous. 'Nuff said about this bad, bad movie.

Great cast, especially, Alan Arkin.

The Hoover Family is largely dysfunctional and should not be spending so much time together, however, the youngest girl is participating in the Little Miss Sunshine contest in California and needs the support of her family. This movie is a classic in showing the ups and downs of family life, and the realities that people face when they have clashing personalities. Nonetheless, little Olive Hoover will make you smile and rethink the things that make you upset. The movie is hilarious, heartwarming, and so much more. Although overwhelming at times, I would rate it 3.5/5 stars and recommend it to those with a dysfunctional family of their own. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library

this movie went from being coarse, crass, and vulgar, to being outright offensive, the final scene of the beauty pageant for prepubescents was a provocation towards sexual abuse, and an unabashed glorification of a culture that, though it rightly condemns it, promotes it - it should follow a strict and clear parental guidance code, but that's apparently not likely to happen, parents themselves seem unaware of the dilemma

Violence: There wasn't any violence in the movie, however I think it should be noted that there was a character who attempted suicide before the movie began. And another character abused drugs and ultimately died as a result.

Sexual Content: The only remotely sexual content were the covers of three adult magazines and a suggestive dance. No overt nudity or sexual scenes were present.

Coarse Language: Plenty of swearing, particularly from the grandfather, who seemed especially enamored of the f-word.
