Mary Henley Rubio has spent over two decades researching Montgomery's life, and has put together a comprehensive and penetrating picture of this Canadian literary icon, all set in rich social context. Extensive interviews with people who knew Montgomery-her son, maids, friends, relatives, all now deceased-are only part of the material gathered in a journey to understand Montgomery that took Rubio to Poland and the highlands of Scotland. From Montgomery's apparently idyllic childhood in Prince Edward Island to her passion-filled adolescence and young adulthood, to her legal fights as world-famous author, to her shattering experiences with motherhood and as wife to a deeply troubled man, this fascinating, intimate narrative of her life will engage and delight.

I am surprised at how little I knew about Lucy Maud Montgomery ("LMM") as I am an avid fan of the Anne series. A recent visit to her home in Leaksdale Ontario opened my eyes to the fact that LMM was a real person who lived in Ontario for almost half her life! The visit further spurred me to read this biography of our beloved talented Canadian author. The books is certainly a provocative and interesting read. It is also heartbreaking - LMM lead a "tragical" life, her woes most certainly outstripped Anne's woes. In terms of the author's style, I felt that in order to engage the reader Ms. Rubio tended to over-dramatize situations making me wonder, how accurate her conclusions were when she extrapolated from her source material (mainly Lucy Maud's own extensive journals). Highly recommended to any fan of the Anne series. It will also probably encourage the reader to read some of the lesser known LMM books and to come to appreciate the adult themes in her writings.

This is *THE* best biography you could ever read on Lucy Maud Montgomery. Mary Rubio is the official biographer of LMM. Maud's son gave Rubio all of Maud's journals & asked her to edit & publish them. Mary Rubio has devoted the majority of her academic life to studying & publishing L.M. Montgomery-related materials. She & Elizabeth Waterston are well-known & very respected in the L.M.Montgomery community. I read & buy anything they publish.

What a fascinating biography of a remarkable woman. LM Montgomery wa an incredible woman who was way ahead of her time. Rubio's well-researched biography of her is of interest not only to fans of LMM's books, but to anyone who wants to read about a great Canadian who made a difference
