The video of this DVD is poor and visual carries a lot of weight in the film. Perhaps the age of the film has something to do with it. Otherwise, it is a fairly talky (philosophical) film. If you are not a fan of Wong Kar-Wei you may choose to skip it.

This movie is usually described by reviewers as "visually superb". The story centres on a man who lives alone in the desert and acts as a middle man between swordsmen and persons seeking revenge. As this man re-accounts stories of some of his old friends and clients he begins to see the truth of his own life more clearly.

Unfortunately this old version of Ashes of Time does not include English translation -- so the story (which has a lot of voice-over narration) is hard to follow for non-Chinese speaking viewers or those who do not already know the story. After watching this version, however, I went on to buy the recently restored version (entitled Ashes of Time Redux) which does include English subtitles. I would give the movie 5 stars, but gave the library's copy only 3.5 stars because of the lack of English subtitles.
