August introduced us to the Jones family and in I’ll Go to Bed at Noon Woodward continues their story into the pre-Thatcherite seventies in London. Colette, the mother, now a full-fledged alcoholic, affects the whole family. Their lives revolve around pubs and drinking, and the attempts by Colette to understand and save her dysfunctional family from implosion. Woodward’s sense of humour and his compassion for his idiosyncratic characters draw us to the Joneses and we wish for contentment in their desperate lives.
