A Scottish Victorian fairy tale, full of Christian metaphysics and period morality, but very charming, fanciful, and poetic. Much of the subject matter -- extreme poverty, alcoholism, domestic abuse, and death -- is very serious, making the book more suitable for older children. Adults interested in the fairy tale genre will probably enjoy this less well-known classic.
