even within a family, grief is an individual experience. there is no magic that protects us from tragedy.

This movie provides a strong emotional exploration of the cause and effect of trauma upon a normal family. The father is a therapist who is heavily invested in his work of helping his patients try to recover from the causes of their fear and grief, but this does not help him deal with his own trauma. The cause of the trauma is unexpected: there is no way to avoid the trauma, there is no crime, and nobody is to blame. The effect upon each member of the family is a self imposed series of emotionally devastating attempts to find some reasonable explanation for the trauma each of them has suffered. The father reflects upon his expectations of his family and himself in an effort to deal with his grief. In the end, he changes, adapts, and moves on with his life as a means to survive the trauma. This movie is a reminder that life is messy and often includes events for which nobody can be blamed. A person's emotional inability to deal with life may be due to events beyond his/her control: the therapist can easily become the patient.

Coping with the death of a loved one is hard for anyone.
Imagine what it is like for a psycho analyst as he listens to the trite phobias of those who come to him.
