Every DAD and maybe Mom too should be required to watch this along with October Sky and maybe Legends of the Fall*. * not for kids

Wonderfully done about what matters in sports. I'd give it 5 stars but cannot find the rating area.

Ben Kingsley is miscast as Bruce Pandolfini (a real chess coach), and the character is very much misrepresented in this movie. Josh WAS under pressure, but wasn't psychologically mistreated in the way this film would suggest. Too bad they chose Kingsley for a role that he didn't acquit well, and too bad the chess coach character was inaccurately written. Josh never made it big as a chess player, though the book gave him a huge start in life.

This film is about expectations, particularly parental, and the resulting pressures. Although told in the context of competitive chess, it could just as easily apply to hockey or any other sport. The moral of moderation and just being yourself is well-presented. The main character is a kid but I think your average kid that age will find the pace of this movie too slow.

Would highly recommend this video. It is an exciting peek into the world of serious chess and gifted players. The tension between NY Central Park gambling chess players and the formal, strictly ruled US chess tournament is fascinating. The young boy who plays a potential Bobby Fischer chess genius is a delightful child actor. The movie covers many aspects of family life, parent values and conflict, how we decide what to promote or discourage in our children's lives. Excellent drama. Highly recommend.

Excellent cast. Great story, well told, still relevant.

I enjoyed this movie. Great acting with a cast of actors who would go on to be quite famous. It is a '93' movie but stands up today. It is also a true story.

Josh learns the lessons of life while his father lets him learn chess from a master.
Through Josh's story we learn that life is not always about winning; sometimes it is OK to loose so that you can have another chance to win.
However, the essence of Josh's heart is the biggest lesson everyone learns.
