⑫🐒 It's unusual for science fiction movies to measure up to the standard this Terry Gilliam film sets. Based on "La Jetée" (and you ought to see that too), it's a remarkable masterpiece. Willis, as criminal James Cole, gets volunteered to go back in time to save humanity from being wiped out by a pandemic, sound familiar, does it? Well, since only 5% of people survived, it's not surprising that the few scientists left were pretty incompetent. Cole ricochets around in and out of different eras, which you can take as equivalents to flashbacks, and if you have trouble following "Pulp Fiction," this flick will probably seem bewildering. But it makes for great adventure solving an enigma, as the clues slowly assemble, which demands a little work on the part of the viewer. Gilliam's satirical bent on view in "Brazil" is missing, but his political ideas are still there. The movie works hard on emphasizing the evil within humans, you probably won't miss that. Brad Pitt tries to steal the show with his stark raving manic character, but Willis is the center of the movie and can't be dislodged. The ending can be interpreted more than one way, which the literal-minded won't like. If you're looking for a good guy to vanquish the bad guy, save the world, and get the girl, you should watch a Roy Rogers movie. The rest of you, and you know who you are, will find it very rewarding. Can't imagine why it got an R rating, Willis' violence is over the top a couple of times, but since when is that R-rated?

Amazing movie! Well worth the months and months of waiting, impressed EPL still has this movie considering how old it is (the R rating is suited for 1995). Love the ending, kinda like Donnie Darko, could be interpreted many different ways. Bruce Willis is great in this and so different from his Die Hard character (the commentary touches on this well for the first hour and how Brad Pitt originally wanted the main character part). The commentary falls apart into hour two into rants about test audiences, but it's entertaining nonetheless.

12 excuses for Bruce Willis to be naked;
12 ideas for screen plays that were never developed;
12 x10 ridiculous attempts at having a plot point;
12 ways to let your characters be dumb;

Ok, you get the idea. Clearly I'm in the minority in feeling this is a sad excuse for a film, but I'm giving this 1.5 stars, because somewhere in the mess, I think there might have been a good idea!

Best time travel movie, ever! (Donnie Darko being second best ever.) Bruce Willis wanted to stretch his acting skills, to be thought of as a dramatic actor, and, he did it, so well. Brad Pitt shows off his incredible acting range and Madeline Stowe is a compelling female lead. I've seen this movie 50 times. That's because I continued to notice new things. Practically no plot holes whatsoever. Excellent sound track.

Four stars--and I rarely give a five-star rating.

Classic movie--a very good one in any genre, but especially good in the Sci-fi category.

Stand-out performances by Bruce Willis in the lead, and one from Brad Pitt in his Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning performance as the crazed loonie, Jeffrey. Simply magnificent--a real career break-out performance from 1995. Once in a while, Pitt is handed a role that allows him to reveal a kind of inspired madness. We saw it again in Burn After Reading. Madelaine Stow's excellent, too.

But the REAL stars of this funny, fascinating and ultimately heart-wrenching movie are the husband-and-wife writing team, David (Bladerunner; Unforgiven) and Janet Peoples and the movie's Director Terry Gilliam.

Brilliant; undiminished in its captivating power, 30-odd years on.

12 Monkeys is conceptually similar to The Last Mimzy and the Terminator series (minus cyborgs), involving retro-corrective time travel to present day from a failed future. This also has aspects that reminded me of Ian Watson's "The Very Slow Time Machine". I particularly liked the fact that Bruce Willis' character did not have all the answers.

Though a science fiction movie, its structured as a tragedy, indeed with an exquisite poignancy that reminds one of Sophocles. Clever and at moments quite funny.

James Cole: Look at them. They're just asking for it. Maybe the human race deserves to be wiped out.
Jeffrey Goines: Wiping out the human race? That's a great idea. That's great. But more of a long-term thing. I mean, first we have to focus on more immediate goals.
