Now that Pern can look forward to a future without the threat of Threadfall, the people are free to leave their protective stone holds and spread across more of the planet, as well as improve their lives with the newly discovered ancient technology. Not everyone is happy, though. Some resist the change, and consider anything new to be an "abomination." And the dragonriders are uncertain: without Thread, what will their purpose be in Pernese society? Then a new danger -- again from the skies -- looms. Once again, the people must pull together... and turn to the only ones who can solve the crisis: the dragonriders of Pern!

I'd heard that a movie or a cable TV series was going to be made on the Pern series...but I don't know if that's true. The last (Ninth) Pass will always be my favourite period of history in the Pern series, so was greatly saddened read that Anne McCaffrey died before she could finish writing the sequel to The Skies of Pern, as...somehow, the series felt incomplete to me.

In the previous book McCaffrey sold the Thread problem on the planet Pern. Now she uses her regal story telling skills to solve the problem "what next?"

By this point, about all the changes you can ring on the Pern situation have been done. The Abominators seem quite contrived: as a reader, you are almost thinking that it's too obvious someone is writing the script behind the scenes, manufacturing improbable dangers and disasters. When the fireball strikes, it's completely unbelievable. That aside, the characters and writing are pretty much as always (although she seems to have turned down the sex quite a bit).
