"Through her writing, astrophysicist Janna Levin has focused on making the science she studies not just comprehensible but also, and perhaps more important, intriguing to the nonscientist. In this book, she helps us to understand and find delight in the black hole—perhaps the most opaque theoretical construct ever imagined by physicists. Levin takes us on an evocative exploration of black holes, provoking us to imagine the visceral experience of a black hole encounter. She reveals the influence of black holes as they populate the universe, sculpt galaxies, and even infuse the whole expanse of reality that we inhabit."--Publisher.

Black holes are fascinating. In popular science terms and from a human perspective, this short, small-format book describes the properties of black holes and the theories of their existence and function. Much is still speculative. There is a fundamental contradiction between what relativity predicts and what quantum mechanics predicts with respect to conservation of information as matter falls into a black hole. Some possible ways around this: a black hole is a 2D hologram with no real third dimension; or the black hole “interior” is a wormhole allowing the escape of information. The hologram conjecture goes further since it implies that our universe is a 3D projection of information encoded in a 2D hologram! While recognizing that some of the concepts are impossible to draw, the only disappointment in this book is the “arty" illustrations, which add nothing to help our understanding of the text.
