"In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. There's Red Ron, the infamous former socialist firebrand, still causing trouble; gentle Joyce, widowed, pining for another resident, but surely not as innocent as she seems; Ibrahim, a former therapist who understands the darker side of human nature; and Elizabeth? Well, no one is quite sure who she really is, but she's definitely not a woman to underestimate. When a local developer is found dead, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. The friends might be septuagenarians, but they are cleverer than most. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before its too late?"--Dust jacket.

Probably one of the more unique murder mysteries I have read in a very long time - it's a great cast of characters and so many red herrings. So. Many. But it's clever and cracks along well, so I look forward to more in this series with our gang of old detectives.

Brilliantly written and I loved dry humour. Highly recommend.

The Thursday Murder Club consists of four elderly mystery enthusiasts living in a retirement village. When a murder is committed on their doorstep they swing into action, led by the redoubtable Elizabeth. A delightful cosy mystery, filled with humour and a dash of pathos.

This lightweight whodunit romp of wicked humour and quirky septuagenarians in the English countrysides seems written with a TV series in mind. Judi Dench as Elizabeth and Bill Nighy as Red Ron anyone?

Loved it. Hilarious, a touch of mystery and very lovable characters. I really hope this writer gives us a second with the same characters.

So. Much. Fun. I went to bed early, let the dishes pile up and ignored everyone around me just to read this delightful story about a group of people in a retirement community who make the Thursday Murder Club whose purpose is to "investigate" cold cases. But when a murder takes place practically on their doorstep, the action really heats up. Loved the characters and didn't want the story to end.

At least on the surface, this is a bit of fluff — a ‘cozy mystery’. The central premise, a quartet of octogenarians who occupy well-appointed flats in a decidedly upscale retirement community have established for their own amusement a “Murder Club”, meeting each week to delve into unsolved murder cases. They have by some means acquired access to extraordinary sources of information not generally available, some of it apparently not even known to the police. It’s all good fun. When a real murder takes place right under their noses, they swing into action and proceed (à la Miss Marple) to discover things the police cannot; hence a love-hate relationship develops with the police. Needless to say, a generous degree of suspension of disbelief is called for.
However, almost hidden beneath this cozy window-dressing there’s a very human story and Osman lets slip his mask of the tongue-in-cheek entertainer to reveal truths about aging, love, death and the choices we make in the name of loyalty, justice and devotion. Such a novel must be, by definition, plot driven: it’s supposed to be all about solving the mystery. And this one does indeed keep us guessing. And yet, it’ the engaging characters who end up stealing the show. So it’s not surprising that a sequel ensues, even though these characters are nearing end of life. So our time with them is to be treasured, for it’s unlikely to last long.
Perfect book for a winter day by the fireside.
