Add a CommentLuminous illustrations and spare text from two Native authors encourage environmental activism. Perfect to introduce shared natural resources when such things as oil pipelines threaten water and habitat.
Winner of the 2021 Caldecott Medal and richly inspiring to everyone from age 3 to adults. This book is a great introduction to environmental injustices endured by all people with connections to Standing Rock and many more far beyond the Dakota Access Pipeline challenges. Beautifully & powerfully written by an Anishinaabe/Métis author enrolled with the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe and gorgeously illustrated by an artist of Tlingit heritage enrolled with the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska!
Told in the form of a parable, We Are Water Protectors is a story of Indigenous Peoples protecting Mother Earth from a poisonous black snake which represents the oil pipelines that threaten to invade their sacred land, contaminate their water, and harm the animals that live there, too. Powerful book about oil pipelines thru protected indigenous lands and the protesting against. My 4 yr got really sad from it that the "bad pipe snake" poisoned the water & land, but my 7 yr old was empowered & really interested. Great introduction to difficult topic.
Illustrations very beautiful too.
