Gwendolen Harleth marries for power and soon regrets it. She turns her attention to Daniel Deronda. At one time he found her attractive, but now he is busily engaged in a search for the family of a young woman he saved from drowning. Deronda's mission leads him into London's East End, where he meets with success. The dual plots of this novel explore the importance of character and touch on anti-Semitism in Victorian society.
