"A riveting story of the dark side of motherhood. Zoe Morgan's childhood was marked by her younger sister's tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days and then divorced. As a young woman driven by these painful memories, Zoe sets the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion for disadvantaged children finds a focus. When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate. As Zoe is haunted by the ghosts of the past, her story will become a race against time and a tale of psychological suspense that no reader will soon forget"--

I like that Danielle Steele took the readers in a different direction with this book. To be honest, I stopped reading her books several years ago because they were too similar to the harlequin style. On a whim, I picked up this book and I must say I really enjoyed it. If you’re into light mysteries you’ll enjoy this read.

DS takes us in a totally different direction with this one. I couldn't stop reading it. Usually I take my time and read her books over several days. I undestand for some that said they didn't really enjoy it. It's because it's not her usual romantic novel. Still enjoyed it.

A quick read of a dark and twisted tale. I did not anticipate the turn of events, so it kept me reading. A lot of repetition - which I encounter in quite a few books written by authors who have enjoyed long term success - I guess they get paid for a 330 plus page book.

This is my first DS book and it wasn't bad. She has excellent character development and a pretty simple story line. The writing itself isn't grandeur but it kept me interested nonetheless.

I usually like Danielle Steele if I want a light read but this book is not it. It moves soooo slow! And there is nothing uplifting about it. I read the first fourth of it and couldn't take it any more. So I skipped to the last quarter of the book and within two chapters figured out what I had missed. The last part did give a twist to Zoe's character I didn't expect but that was the it. There is nothing else redeeming about this book.

Like all DS books, this was a quick read. It was so heavy though, and depressing. It sends a good message, but you have to wait a long time for it all to come together. it honestly was tough to get through this one. Looking forward to the next one....always a fan of DS!

This book was so depressing. Thought I could keep reading but decided I had better books to enjoy. Finally set it aside so someone else on the Wait List could give it a try.

I love ds for a light read. This book was awful from the repetition of words to the depressing plot and characters I didn't care about. Cannot recommend.

If there is one thing that one can say about Danielle steel it is that her books are very well-researched. In 'the Dark Side," 10 year old Zoe loses her 7 year old sister Rose to leukemia. This begins a downward spiral in her life where her parents get divorced and she has no parents to speak of. Despite these challenges, Zoe excels academically and becomes very successful in her career at an NGO for abused children. She marries Austin Robert and when she gives birth to Jaime her happiness is complete. This is where the story gets 'black' and without being a spoiler all I can say is that I found the book gripping and a page-turner. A very well-written book.
