A well written and believable story that wrestles with the real anguish some individuals feel being gay. A really great read!
In reality, it doesn't matter whether one is gay or straight! We're all just people...

A beautifully written book that really shows you how you can love god and yourself (homosexuality and all). Thought provoking, it deals with scriptures truthfully and honestly calling you to question for yourself and understand more than you did before.

“Sex and religion don’t mix. The church should stay out of people’s pants.” With these opening words, the agenda and topic of this novel are presented right up front. You can’t say you don’t know what you’re getting into here.

This is an anguished and moving account of a modern problem that is of acute interest to today’s youth. It deals with the topics of religion, sexuality and bullying with sensitivity and truly accurate characterization. The reader is plunged headlong into the life of one conflicted Paul (aka Pablo), who is trying to come to grips with his closeted homosexuality and the mixed messages he gets from everyone around him. It’s impossible to remain removed from his mental struggle as the writer vividly renders his crisis of faith, his growing erotic attraction to a classmate and his tortured dealings with his girlfriend.

This novel shows just how much a gifted writer can make unusual readings enticing and absorbing. Even though I’m not of the faith, I didn’t find the fair amount of Biblical text in this novel off-putting or heavy-handed. The writer makes it clear that Biblical teachings shouldn’t be swallowed wholesale but that they can withstand study and questioning. I therefore believe that this book would be of interest to many teenagers and also adults who wish to know more about Christian text and/or adolescent concerns. When a book makes you think this much about matters outside your normal interests, it’s worth passing on to others.
