OK, listen. The first two cds of this audiobook, while printed as Jake Tapper's THE HELLFIRE CLUB, were in fact mis-labeled. They were Michael Koryta's HOW IT HAPPENED. If you think this makes a coherent story, think again.

I enjoyed the Tapper parts of the yarn. Eventually.

Never mind that historical fiction is the very cheapest of literary forms, partly because it's neither. It's like "diet cookies." It accomplishes neither objective while giving the illusion of each. I still enjoyed the idea of this young, appointed congressman nodding to JFK the senator on the street in Georgetown and then discovering this secret society. Now the secret society part, that part is real and readers should take note. Tapper who went to my alma mater probably did not tapped, (no pun intended) for Skull and Bones and if he did I suspect he's in a heap of trouble with his brethren. I did not either but I don't think many women are, if any. This book centers on a more ancient society that dated back to Benjamin Franklin and the book becomes part "House of Cards" the TV series and part "The Davinci Code" as it rolls along. It's not to be taken seriously and yet... well it sort of is. The larger point is the populace at large, those of us with the votes, althouhgh we are cajoled and rallied every two years or so; We are just plankton bobbing on seas controlled by unseen forces we will never be invited to understand.

I was so disappointed in this novel. Yet another story of the uncovering of a nefarious 'secret society' at the highest levels running or undermining our government. Characters are one-dimensional and implausible. I anticipate an awful movie will be made of it.
