the story of a French mine disaster in 1906, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courri%C3%A8res_mine_disaster,
is transposed into a post-WW1 disaster right on the French/German border.

the German miners concern for their French co-miners is played out in a non-political manner, though regional/national tensions are present.

very interesting b&w 1931 movie.
